A 'Full House' for Joe Cornish and Steve Byard

Northallerton CC held its first open night since our 75th Anniversary celebrations in 2008, and as then, we hired the main hall of the Northallerton Forum for the event. It was just as well with virtually a full house of well over 200 enjoying an evening of entertainment and technique provided by Joe Cornish Hon.FRPS, ably supported by our own Stephen Byard AFIAP DPAGB.

The evening opened with each of them giving us a short retrospective decscribing how they each came to landscape photography by different routes. Joe Cornish explained how he had developed his photography from an artistic point of view, whilst Steve had come from a techincal and computer background. They noted that now they were both finding the importance of the other's origins, Joe appreciating and emphasing the importance of technical expertise, whilst Steve was finding much reward from developing an artistic aspect to his work.

Whilst they had often come to the same, or more accurately similar, results Joe felt that his approach was essentially to want to record the beauty of the landscape, where necessary utilising the tools of electronic imaging software to enhance that concept. Steve accepted that he was always seeking to find the ideal composition and lighting but if that failed he was quite prepared to create what he felt was a believable landscape by 'melding' parts of different images together into a composition that only existed because of his imagination.

In amongst all this input about their thoughts and techniques we were treated to a miscellany of their photographs and images, explaining how they arrived at them, and keeping the audience enthralled throughout. At the end of the evening our Honorary Life Vice President gave a vote of thanks in which he commented that he thought everyone would take something of value away from what was a wonderful evening's entertainement.

Results from the 2011 PAGB Annual PDI Club Championships at Warwick
Thurne Windmill

"Thurne Windmill" by Henrietta Byrne LRPS DPAGB

A total of eight club members and supporters travelled to the Arts Centre at Warwick University on Saturday 16th July to support the club as it and Stokesley PS represented the NCPF at this annual event. This is now the 13 time in 14 years that our club has had the honour of competing at Warwick.

Riding the Wave

"Riding the Wave" by Stephen Byard AFIAP DPAGB

The club qualified to go to the championship by winning the NCPF Club Championships back in February, when they were held at Washington. Stokelesy as runners up there also qualified. Each club has to submit a bank of 40 images to the PAGB that they can then select from to use on the day. The competition consists of two initial rounds each of 8 images. The totals from these rounds are added together and the eight highest scoring clubs go through to the final round, with the remainder competing for the Plate Trophy. Marking is done by 3 judges, scoring between 1 and 5 on voting machines giving potential scores of between 3 and 15 for each image. There were some 28 clubs representing the various regions and federations in the PAGB and a further 8 clubs that qualified by virtue of being finalist in last years' competition.

Lower Antelope Canyon

"Lower Antelope Canyon" by Sheila Coates LRPS EFIAP DPAGB

At the end of the first round Northallerton had scored 88 points, whilst Stokesley were just ahead of us on 92; the leaders, Wigan 10 had 104. We then put the next 8 images into the second round and we seem to fair a little better, scoring 91 points and giving us a totals for the two rounds of 179. This put us in twelfth place, sadly just 3 points out a potential 240 short of reaching the final round. Stokesley faired little better getting a combined total of 175 and leaving them in 18th position overall. Whilst the leading club (yes Wigan 10 again) scored 202 the next highest score was 188, with three clubs tieing for 8th place on 182. This meant that 10 club went through to the final round leaving 26 to compete for the Plate Competition.

Trees & Pinnacles

"Trees & Pinnacles" by Dave Coates ARPS EFIAP/g EPSA MPAGB APAGB

In the Plate Competition we had to submit a further 8 images, only 4 of which could have been used before. At the end of this single round competition we scored 94 points and this placed us in 7th position with our friends from stokely in 18th place with 89. There was however a tie-break for the trophy between Gwynfa CC and Southampton CC who both scored 100 points; this was won by Southampton CC. Again whilst we did not win the result was extremely creditable result, beating even the likes of Dumfries CC.

Twisleton Winter

"Twisleton Winter" by Chris Morton PPSA DPAGB

To put the result in perspective, one of our group noted that our 12th position in the main competition and our 7th position in the Plate Competition put us ahead of all those clubs representing NCP, and our two neigbouring Northern Federations, the Yorkshire Photographic Union and the Lancashire & Cheshire Photographic Union. The overall winners of the final round, Wigan 10, were attending in their own right as one of last year's finalists.

Red Squirrel

We have included here an image from each of those membrs whose images werev used during the acutual competition. However we would also like to thank all those members who contributed to our bank of images, whether they were used or not, we could not compete without you.

Congratulations to club members on their Awards

A number of our members have recently gained prestigeous awards for their acheivements in photography. Steve Byard and Sheila Coates have gained success with awards from FIAP, Dave Coates and Sandy Furniss from PSA, whilst Ken and Chris Hadfield have had their work recognised by the RPS.

Dave has been awarded EPSA (Excellence PSA) having logged over 1100 acceptances in PSA Recognised Internationals (the requirement is actually 750). Sandy has gone one better with the award of MPSA (Master PSA) meeting a requirement for at least 1500 acceptances.

Sheila was awarded EFIAP (Excellance FIAP) for gaining over 150 acceptances from 50 different photographs, whilst Steve has just been awarded AFIAP (Artist FIAP) having met and far exceeded the criteria of 30 acceptances from at least 10 different photographs.

Ken and Chris Hadfield continue their success this year with a real husband and wife "double act". At the recent RPS Assesment Day they both submitted panels of 10 prints to the Royal. It is no more than we would expect but they both met with success and were awarded their Licentiate Award

This means that both of them can now put the letters LRPS after their names. This may be the first rung of the ladder but it is no mean achievement. Our congratulations go to both.
